3 Lessons Learned from AC Milan Chelsea

AC Milan need to shore up the back line:

The Rossoneri have conceded 8 goals in four preseason friendlies. They have lacked a little pace, composure, and were cut open too easily. I know preseason friendlies aren’t always the best measuring stick for performance, but the concern over the defense is a legitimate one.

Don’t forget, Fiorentina have added Mario Gomez, Josep Ilicic and Giuseppe Rossi. La Viola also brought in former Spanish International wideman Joaquin and made Juan Cuadrado a permanent signing. Napoli have done very well to add Higuian, Dries Mertens and Callejon up front. They will also have more pace and steel to choose from with Pablo Armero. Juventus are boasting a very potent attack that has in it Llorente, Tevez, Vucinic, Goivinco and Matri. Not to mention Marchisio, Vidal and Pirlo sitting just behind these wonderful forwards. Simply put, Serie A is not short on attacking talent.

Milan are building a great project:

Balotelli, El Shaarawy, De Sciglio are the more obvious names, but Niang, the Andreas Poli and Petagna plus Bryan Cristante are all wonderful, rising footballers, with Poli the elder statesmen at just 23 years of age. Expect to see more quality names come through the Rossoneri youth ranks in the years to come.

AC Milan and Serie A giants behind the EPL:

The amount of quality Chelsea was able to select from last night was staggering: Juan Mata, Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne, Andre Schurrle, Demba Ba, Branislav Ivanovic, John Terry, Fernando Torres, Victor Moses, Ramires, Ashley Cole, Mark Schwarzer, John Obi Mikel, Marco van Ginkel, Oscar, Cesar Azpilicueta, Michael Essien, Gary Cahill, Ryan Bertrand and Peter Cech all got minutes last night at MetLife Stadium. You could form two separate world class starting elevens from that lineup, a testament to not just the bankroll, but the visibility and desirability of the Barclay’s English Premier League. There were more Chelsea fans in attendance than AC Milan, Valencia, and Inter Milan fans combined. Everton have done their name no harm, while Juventus and Inter struggled to find their feet in the tournament.

That said, the Serie A summer transfer window has seen some wonderful names come in, while England’s top flight have been missing out on their transfer targets. Also, AC Milan are more valuable than Chelsea FC. How do you like that, Roman?

AC Milan’s will look to respond with a strong performance in the Guinness International Champions Cup 3rd place match. The Rossoneri take on the LA Galaxy August 7th from Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida at 6:30pm EDT. The Final between Real Madrid and Chelsea follows at 9:00. Look forward to a cracking cup final!
